What is TMJ Disorder?
The Temoromandibular Joint (also known as the TMJ), is a hinge which connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, It allows you to move your jaw up and down and from side to side to you are able to speak and eat properly.
TMJ Disorder (or TMD) occurs when there are issues with the jaw and the muscles in your face that cause symptoms like jaw pain, headaches and ringing in the ears. If left untreated, it can lead to chronic pain, bone loss, gum tissue changes and loose teeth.
More often than not, this disorder is caused by a misalignment of your jaw or teeth (or both). However, other factors that can contribute to this disorder include preexisting airway issues, trauma to your jaw, your skull shape and your genetics.
TMJ Disorder Treatment
At Robie Street Dental Centre, our dentists can test for, diagnose and provide a treatment plan for TMJ Disorder.
Treatment can include wearing a mouth guard while you sleep to help prevent grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw.
Our dentists might also recommend that you use physical therapy, relaxation techniques, or a TENS machine (a kind of electrical stimulus device) to help encourage your jaw and facial muscles to relax.
In some cases, orthodontic treatment may be required to correct underlying misalignment issues. Our dentists will work with you to create a treatment plan based on your specific needs.
TMJ Disorder Symptoms
TMJ Disorder is capable of causing a variety of significant painful symptoms. Your jaw muscles have to work extra hard at their job, causing main and stiffness. Common symptoms can include:
- Dizziness

- Teeth grinding (usually during sleep)
